Frequently asked questions
What is a virtual instrument?
A virtual instrument is software that makes sound like a hardware instrument would: a synth, piano, drum kit or bass. It runs inside your DAW as a plugin, and you play it from a MIDI keyboard or by drawing notes in your project.
Do I need a MIDI keyboard to use virtual instruments?
No. You can draw or click notes into your DAW with the mouse. A MIDI keyboard makes it easier to play parts in and to control how hard each note is played.
Will a virtual instrument work in my DAW?
Check the formats in the product's specifications. Most DAWs load VST3, Logic Pro uses Audio Unit and Pro Tools uses AAX. Products that also open on their own list Standalone under Format.
