Saturation Plugins
A saturation plugin adds harmonics that make a sound warmer, fuller or grittier, the way tape, valves and analogue gear colour audio. Turn it up and saturation becomes distortion. Some saturation plugins also add vintage noise, wobble and lo-fi character. Each product lists its formats and system requirements.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between saturation and distortion?
Both add harmonics to a sound. Saturation is the gentle end, which adds warmth and makes a sound feel fuller; distortion is the same process pushed harder, which makes it audibly rough or fuzzy.
Where should I use a saturation plugin?
On almost anything that sounds too clean: drums for punch, bass so it is heard on small speakers, vocals for presence, or the whole mix for glue. Small amounts are usually enough.
Will a saturation plugin work in my DAW?
Check the formats in the product's specifications. Most DAWs load VST3 or VST2, Logic Pro uses Audio Unit and Pro Tools uses AAX.
