Serum 2 is a hybrid software synthesizer from Xfer Records, with wavetable, multisample, sample, granular and spectral oscillators. It is for producers who design their own sounds as well as those who start from presets. It runs as a VST3, AU or AAX plugin in a 64-bit host on Windows 10 or later and macOS.
What is Serum 2?
Serum 2 is the current version of the Xfer Serum synth and replaces Serum 1. Alongside its wavetable oscillator, it has oscillators that play recorded instruments, loop and slice samples, build granular textures and resynthesise harmonics in real time.
Key features of the Serum synth
- Wavetable oscillator with smooth interpolation between frames, plus filtering, FM, PD, ring modulation, distortion and warp modes
- Multisample oscillator that plays recordings of real instruments and imports your own instruments in the open sfz format
- Sample oscillator with snap loop detection, loop modulation, sample slicing and a rate control for tape-stop effects
- Granular oscillator for shaping sound textures
- Spectral oscillator with real-time harmonic resynthesis and transient detection
- Flexible effect routing, an arpeggiator and a clip sequencer
What’s included
- Over 600 presets
- Nearly 300 wavetables
- A multisample library of real instruments, including orchestra, choir, pianos and guitars
Serum 1 vs Serum 2
Serum 2 replaces Serum 1, and Xfer Records gives it to Serum 1 owners as a free upgrade. Xfer does not publish a feature-by-feature comparison, so the feature list above is the best guide to what Serum 2 offers.
