Short answer: there is no single best DAW; the best one is the one that fits how you make music and the computer you use. For beat-making, FL Studio is the classic pick. For electronic music and live performance, Ableton Live. For songwriting and recording on a Mac, Logic Pro. For recording, mixing and composing on Windows or Mac, Cubase or Pro Tools. For sound design, Bitwig Studio, and on a tight budget, REAPER.
Every DAW below can record, edit, mix and finish a track. The differences are in workflow, included instruments, plugin formats and which systems they run on.
How we chose this list
We picked the DAWs people search for and compare most often in our UK and US keyword research, then compared them on what each developer publishes: supported systems, plugin formats, editions and key features. We did not rank them by what we stock. We sell Ableton Live; we do not sell FL Studio, Logic Pro, Cubase, Pro Tools, Fender Studio Pro, Bitwig Studio or REAPER, and they are included because they belong on any honest list.

Best for beat-making: FL Studio
FL Studio grew out of a step sequencer. You build drums and parts as patterns, write notes in the Piano Roll and arrange patterns, audio and automation clips in the Playlist. Image-Line gives owners lifetime free updates for their edition, and FL Studio 2026 is a free update for everyone. Note that the entry Fruity Edition does not record audio; Producer Edition and higher do. Browse plugins that work with FL Studio if you use it.
Best for electronic music and live performance: Ableton Live
Ableton Live’s Session View lets you play clips at any time and in any order, which makes it the natural choice for jamming, sound design and live sets, with Arrangement View for the finished song. Ableton Live 12 Suite is the current version, with Max for Live, MIDI Tools, the Meld synth, Roar and a sound library of over 70 GB. Ableton Live 11 Suite, the previous version, still runs on older computers (macOS 10.13 with the Intel build, Windows 10 build 1909). Our Ableton Live vs FL Studio comparison goes deeper if you are choosing between two of the most compared DAWs.
Best for Mac users: Logic Pro
Logic Pro is Apple’s DAW for the Mac and iPad. The current version needs macOS 15.6 or later and a Mac with Apple silicon. Apple includes Live Loops (a grid of loops you can trigger), Session Players (AI-powered bass, keyboard, drum and synth players) and Stem Splitter. Logic hosts Audio Units plugins only, so check that a plugin lists AU before you buy, or browse Audio Unit plugins for Logic Pro. Logic Pro is sold only by Apple through the App Store; we do not sell it.
Best for recording, mixing and composing
Cubase
Steinberg’s Cubase 15 comes in three main editions. Cubase Pro has unlimited tracks, nearly 100 effects and Dolby Atmos support. Cubase Artist also has unlimited tracks, over 70 effects and VariAudio pitch correction. Cubase Elements is the budget entry with limited tracks, Chord Pads and over 20 GB of sounds and loops. It runs on Windows and macOS.
Pro Tools
Pro Tools is Avid’s DAW. The current version, 2026.4.1, supports Windows 11 and the latest updates of macOS 14, 15 and 26, and Avid lists 16 GB of RAM. Pro Tools only loads plugins in Avid’s AAX format, so check for an AAX version before you buy.
Fender Studio Pro
PreSonus Studio One Pro is now sold as Fender Studio Pro, and version 8.2 is the latest update. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux (Ubuntu 24.04 or later) and needs 8 GB of RAM and around 40 GB of disk space, according to Fender’s specs page. Fender offers a free 30-day demo.
Best for sound design: Bitwig Studio
Bitwig Studio 6.1 runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and supports VST and CLAP plugins. Bitwig describes its modular environment, The Grid, as a playground for sound designers, and it adds more than 40 modulators. Its Clip Launcher works for jamming and live sets in a similar way to Live’s Session View.
Best on a budget: REAPER
REAPER from Cockos is updated often (version 7.84 arrived on 28 October 2026) and is very flexible. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and supports almost every plugin format, including VST, VST3, AU, CLAP and LV2. You can evaluate it in full for 60 days before deciding.
Best DAW for Windows
Every DAW on this list except Logic Pro runs on Windows. For beats, FL Studio; for electronic music and performance, Ableton Live 12 (Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11, with a CPU that supports AVX2); for recording and mixing, Cubase or Pro Tools (Windows 11).
Best DAW for Mac
On an Apple silicon Mac, Logic Pro is the obvious starting point, especially for songwriting and recording. If you also use Windows, want Session View or need VST plugins, Ableton Live runs on both systems. All the other DAWs here also run on macOS.
Plugins matter as much as the DAW
Whichever DAW you choose, third-party instruments and effects are what really expand it. Most work across DAWs, but formats matter: Logic needs Audio Units, Pro Tools needs AAX, and most other DAWs use VST or VST3 (FL Studio, Bitwig Studio and REAPER also support CLAP). Check the formats on each product page before you buy.
